1. (intransitive) to be valid; to count; to hold true

   Synonym:

2. (intransitive) to be effective; to be in force

   Die neuen Parkregeln gelten ab nächster Woche, also pass auf, wo du dein Auto parkst!

   The new parking rules will be in force from next week, so be careful where you park your car!

3. (transitive) to be worth

   Dieses Auto mag alt sein, aber es gilt immer noch 3000 Euro auf dem Markt.

   This car might be old, but it is still worth 3000 euros on the market.

4. (intransitive, formal) to be for/of (+ dative)

5. (intransitive, with “als” or “für”) to be regarded (as something); to pass (for something)

   Diese Regeln gelten als sehr streng an unserer Schule.

   These rules are regarded as very strict at our school.

6. (impersonal) to be necessary

   In der Schule gelten strenge Regeln, um die Sicherheit der Schüler zu gewährleisten.

   In school, it is necessary to have strict rules to ensure the safety of the students.

7. (intransitive, with “lassen”) to pass; to go; (Often translated with lassen as a unit into allow, endure, permit, accept, etc.)

   Das will ich ausnahmsweise mal gelten lassen.

   I will let that pass [allow, concede, endure, permit, accept that] as an exception.
